Change Dock Minimize Effect

When you minimize a Mac application to the dock it normally uses the "genie" effect. On slower machines this can be slow and processor intensive. This tweak allows you to use alternative minimize effects.

To implement this tweak:

  1. Start a new Terminal session (in Finder click Applications > Utilities > Terminal).

  2. To set this to Genie Effect, type (or copy and paste) the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect -string "genie"

To set this to Suck Effect, type (or copy and paste) the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect -string "suck"

To set this to Scale Effect, type (or copy and paste) the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect -string "scale"
  3. To reset this setting to the default value, type (or copy and paste) the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect -string "genie"
  4. To activate this tweak immediately, type the following command, or wait until the next reboot:

    killall Dock
  5. Close the Terminal session by typing exit at the prompt.
